Love & Fortitude
I started designing album covers for friends and fell in love with the design process. But everyone says that, right? Like many designers, I fell in love with the process. But formal education wasn’t an option, so I took a different path. I threw myself into the real world, learning by doing.
I got an internship at a lifestyle, entertainment, and fashion company, learning hands-on while freelancing for media and entertainment clients. This foundation led to a two-year role as an art director at a record label. There, I saw how impactful design could be when paired with storytelling in music.
Next, I joined a design studio in Lagos. Over two years, I sharpened my craft and transitioned into digital design. UX and UI work opened my eyes to how design could solve problems at scale. I eventually pursued a degree in international business and trade to connect creative thinking with business goals.
Design doesn’t start on the screen for me. My approach begins with research and a willingness to design solutions based on each project's unique needs. To borrow from Emerson, I try to become a “transparent eyeball” - quiet, observant, and open.
While technology enables possibilities, people interact with the design that simplifies complexity and helps them achieve their goals. I reject design for design's sake. I design things to work better. If the product helps people and makes life easier, I’ve done my job.
I’ve started using generative AI in my process, but tools are just tools. What makes a difference is taste, inspiration, style, and a clear point of view.
Design is how I see and understand the world. It’s how I think, solve problems, build. To me, every project is about making something easy to use, honest, and marketable. That takes time, focus, care, and patience to keep going until it works.
